Anna Santoliquido
to Franca Amendola
when I was born
the torrent overflowed
the cocks crowed
and sparrows chirped
when I was born
the horses neighed
my mother ground her teeth
and committed herself to the Madonna
when I was born
the flying stars bargained
and a battlesome spirit
descended on earth
when I was born
the wind settled on the roof
gathered strength
and raised the birth cry
